It usually affects people between 40 and 60 years of age. The male-to-female ratio is 2:1 and the etiology is unknown. An estimated 20 to 50% of hypernephromas are associated with Von Hippel-Lindau disease. Consideration of the nature of hypernephroma shows great variety in presentation and speed of growth.

Because of the 11-year period covered in this paper, the CT scans were performed on several different-generation CT units, including Delta 50, Pfizer S200, GE 8800, and GE 9800 scanners. Six patients are reported with hypernephroma and various combinations of hepatomegaly, splenomegaly, and hepatic dysfunction without hepatic metastases or other factors to account for the abnormalities.

Renal cell carcinomas (RCC) (historically also known as hypernephroma or Grawitz tumour) are primary malignant adenocarcinomas derived from the renal tubular epithelium and are the most common malignant renal tumour. They usually occur in 50-70-year old patients and macroscopic haematuria occurs in 60% of the cases. Malignant hypernephromas usually exhibit degenerative changes which vary with their extent and rate of growth. Most large tumors present areas of necrosis and hemorrhage, the latter sometimes so profuse as to induce a rapid increase in volume. The radiologic, pathologic, and clinical findings were reviewed in 18 patients with calcified hypernephroma and 6 with calcified benign renal lesions.
