While there may be more objective clinical criteria for defining stages of FTD and dementia in general, what is presented here is from a caregiving perspective.

Patients either develop speech difficulties, known as aphasia, or they display inappropriate social behavior. Frontotemporal dementia (FTD) is a group of disorders in which neurodegeneration chiefly affects brain areas called the frontal and temporal lobes. No single underlying pathological process is known. FTD, once considered rare, is now thought to account for up to 10 to 15 percent of all dementia cases. FTD is the diagnosis for about 5 percent of people with major neurocognitive disorders (dementia).
